ES MEJOR ENCENDER UNA LUZ...
2012 "Mujeres Mixtecas" -- a cooperative of indigenous women from Guerrero living in Tijuana -- were invited to produce and sell blouses embroidered by hand in a stall we were programming in collaboration with shop-owners at the Mercado de Artesanias de La Linea. The residency marked the first time the women were allowed to make and/or sell their products formally, as before they had been subjected to harassment, fines and/or confiscation of their goods by police at the Port of Entry. As part of their residency, a language exchange was organized -- people from either side of the border came together to practice/learn Spanish/English/Mixtec -- and a mobile hand-embroidered mural was produced with the phrase "It is better to light a fire than to curse the darkness" embroidered in both Mixtec and Spanish. |
