NASA SUMMER SESSIONS
2017 NASA was a series of hyper-local radio transmissions that took place over the summer of 2017 in Santa Ana, CA. Taking “Space Exploration” as framework, each broadcast considers the ways gentrification and urban development has shaped the city in recent years, and how residents have responded to these shifts through collective (re)purposing of space and culture. Transmission + Recording + Listening sessions were held in and around Downtown Santa Ana as part of the project, including a mobile broadcast featuring Chulita Vinyl Club Santa Ana, which was recorded and transmitted live from inside the Cog•nate Cruiser as we made our way through local neighborhoods. |
Transmission #1 – “Let’s Talk About Space” contemplates the space of the neighborhood as home, addressing downtown Santa Ana’s past, present and contested future.
Transmission #2 – “Across the Sea of Space” considers a form of space travel, migration, and the ways it has shaped the lives of individuals and communities in Santa Ana.
Transmission #3 – “Whose Space?” features Santanerxs responding to this question by declaring it their own -- staking their claim to city and neighborhood as a right to home, as a right to a space they have constructed through collective effort and sacrifice to become familiar, to offer shelter, and to provide opportunities for them to flourish as individuals, families and communities.

Transmission #4 – “Space Cruisin’” featured local DJ collective Chulita Vinyl Club Santa Ana riding with us aboard the “cog•nate cruiser”, sharing stories and spinning music as we broadcast our way through the city.
